Frankly

The other day during my exhibition opening cocktail a published but lesser known photographer approached me. He told me that he loves my work; then he showed me some samples of his portfolio. He seems to be more into landscapes and entomology; you know the science of insects... He has a great collection of macro butterfly and insect shots. Adorable macro compositions. When I was watching his work, my breath was cut off. So amazing…

Quite often, a friend or someone else asks me how I manage to take such beautiful photos. I’ll be honest; I am not a good photographer; I’m just a good thinker. I love to watch and record still frames.

“What is the technique; teach me…” Almost everybody says that, and I am always as amazed as the first time I’ve heard these words… There is nothing special I am doing. There is nothing to teach. Only few of my friends know it, I just hold my camera and shoot. I am a street photographer; I capture the moment even if it is just an empty wall. For that I ensure you, you have to be quick. Click and go… That’s the motto. In addition to that fact I can only identify two or three of my photos as lifetime achievements and all of them are fabrication of pure luck. The rest… they have a level of quality; and that’s it.

The quality level of my photos are a little more consistent than many photographers because I simply put more time on postproduction than an average photographer. I don’t publish all my photos; I strictly and cruelly eliminate the photos that I don’t like.

But really, I don’t do much else. I only enjoy myself around my family and friends. This photo, for example, has been taken in a restaurant in Vienna, Austria. I was enjoying a quality time with few of my friends. The photo actually has a lot of technical issues to be addressed. However the composition is moving. I didn’t even look through the visor to capture the photo. Using instinctive manual settings and shooting back to back a total of 10-20 shots, I was able to capture this one. I have deleted the rest of the shots.

Now after 2 years I am publishing this photo first time ever. That basically means that for 2 years I have watched this photo over and over again. I have compared it against my entire portfolio and I have decided to publish it after a lot of thinking. This is the only difference that I can tell. I just take my time…

I am not a better photographer; I am just a fool, who creates more free time to spend on photography...
